Is this the rumoured 6-inch Samsung Galaxy S7 Plus

Recently, a case maker leaked what it claimed to be renders of the Samsung Galaxy S7. Apart from showing us what the unannounced device would look like, the leak also claimed that there will be another version of the S7 aside from the regular and curved (S7 Edge Plus) versions – the 6-inch Samsung Galaxy S7 Plus. Now, CAD renders and a video of the device have been leaked as well.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Plus?

USwitch and OnLeaks are responsible for leaking the renders and the video, which they claim come from renders sent to them by a source.

If these renders are to be believed, the Samsung Galaxy S7 will look a lot like its predecessor the Samsung Galaxy S6. The only noticeable difference, however, is the home button. The S6 features a rounded home button. The S7 features a rectangular home button.

Since we can’t confirm if these renders show the real deal, treat them like every other rumour for now.

So far, aside from the screen sizes, rumours are claiming that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will feature a new 20-megapixel rear-facing camera that is more ideal for snapping high-quality photos in even the poorest light conditions. As for the processor under the hood, markets such as the US and China are said to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, while markets such as the UK are said to rock the Samsung-made Exynos 8890 SoC. The S7 is expected to feature 4 GB of RAM. Unlike the S6, the S7 is said to feature a microSD card slot. For better heat management, Samsung is said to be testing a variety of heat pipes. A USB Type-C connector is said to be on board.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S7’s unveiling, Samsung is expected to lift the lid on the Galaxy S7 on the 21st of February in Barcelona, Spain, a day before MWC 2016.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S7 Edge Plus to be released at the same time

This year Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 Edge, followed by the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus a few months after. If a new rumour is to be believed, we may see the two released simultaneously.

To launch simultaneously?

The new rumour comes from Vietnamese-speaking SamsungViet. A recent report claimed that the upcoming S7 will be launched in two screen sizes – 5.2 inches and a 5.7 inches version. This new report re-confirms the screen sizes, but is now saying that the two different screen sizes is reserved for the edged version of the S7 – the S7 Edge. Presumably, the 5.2-inch version will be called the S7 Edge, while the 5.7-inch variant will be called the S7 Edge Plus. Surprising? Not at all, since we did see the S6 and S6 Edge this year. What took us by surprise is that the report is saying that the two will share the same release date.

Like any rumour, take this with a grain of salt.

What we’ve learned from past rumours

Word on the street is that three versions are said to be available – a variant headed to markets such as Europe will feature the Exynos 8890 SoC made by Samsung, a variant headed to markets such as the US is said to offer the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU, and a version headed to India with the Exynos 7422, which is the same CPU found under the hood of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Past reports have claimed that Samsung is testing a frame made out of magnesium alloy that will make the smartphone lighter yet stronger. A USB Type-C connector is said to be on board. The S7 is said to feature a Force Touch screen.  Its camera is said to be a thinner 20-megapixel ISOCELL sensor. Lastly, a recent report is claiming that the S7 will feature a high-end digital-to-analog converter (DAC) – the ESS SABRE 9018AQ2M.

Samsung is expected to lift the lid on its next flagship earlier than expected in January and release the device in February.
