Microsoft Lumia 950 makes its official debut

The Microsoft Lumia 950 is probably one of the worst kept secrets in the mobile phone industry this year, with leaked specs, images, and press renders found all over the internet. Now, we can say that leaks will come to a stop as the Software giant has just made its new high-end smartphone official.

Specs-wise, the Microsoft Lumia 950 sports a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD), which works out to a pixel density of 564 ppi. Its camera combo consists of a 20-megapixel PureView rear-facing camera with ZEISS optics, triple LED flash, 5th generation optical image stabilisation, and 4K video recording, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for snapping selfies and video chat. On board is 32 GB of internal storage. For additional storage options, it does come with a microSD card slot. Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 64-bit 1.8 GHz hexa-core processor with an Adreno 418 GPU to handle graphics, coupled with 3 GB of RAM. Don’t worry about this processor causing overheating issues, as Microsoft has equipped this smartphone (as well as the Lumia 950 XL) with liquid cooling tech. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, a dual-band antenna, and a USB Type C connector. A 3,000 mAh battery is on board, which supports rapid charging and Qi wireless charging. Its dimensions are 82.1 x 145 x 73.2 mm, and is constructed out of plastic. Don’t worry about the handset looking and feeling tacky, as Microsoft has proven through past high-end devices that plastic can look and feel premium. It runs Windows 10 Mobile out of the box and is available in the following colour options: white and black.

Continuum is another feature that allows you to plug in the smartphone into a separate monitor and keyboard, allowing you to use the phone just like you would on a computer. Windows Hello beta is on board, which is a feature that uses the infra-red sensor to securely unlock the smartphone.

Price and release date

The Lumia 950 costs around £359 for the SIM free version. According to Microsoft, the device will be available in November.

Under the hood is the controversial Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, which is a 64-bit octa-core processor clocked as much as 2 GHz with an Adreno 430 GPU to handle graphics. Microsoft Lumia 950 XL to sport 3,340 mAh removable battery, leaked photo reveals

Lately, the news has been dominated by the Microsoft Lumia 950 smartphone and the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phablet. We’ve been coming across the devices’ leaked live photos, press renders, and specs. Now, if a new leak is to be believed, we’ve learned more about the phablet’s battery.

Steve Hemmerstoffer (@stagueve), which is the man behind French-speaking NWE, a site known for leaking accurate information on yet to be announced devices, is responsible for leaking the image you see above on Twitter. If the photo shows the real deal, we should expect the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL to sport a 3,340 mAh battery instead of a 3,300 mAh battery, which was previously reported. Additionally, we’re seeing that the battery can be pulled out, which means it is the removable type. This is the first time we’ve learned that the battery will be the removable type.

Other features shown by the photo is the phablet’s SIM card slot and its microSD card slot.

We’ve learned from previous leaks that the Lumia 950 XL will sport a 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD). Under the hood is said to be the controversial Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor, coupled with 3 GB of RAM. We’re hoping Microsoft resolves the said CPU’s overheating issues. It is said to rock a 20-megapixel PureView rear-facing camera with triple LED flash and ZEISS optics and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for snapping selfies and video chat. It is also said to offer 32 GB of internal storage. Like previous Lumia devices, the Lumia 950 XL is expected to support Qi wireless charging. It will run Windows 10 Mobile out of the box.

The Lumia 950 XL is to be joined by the smaller Lumia 950 smartphone. It is rumoured to sport a 5.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD). Under the hood is said to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 64-bit hexa-core processor under the hood, coupled with 3 GB of RAM. 32 GB of internal storage will be on board. It also comes with a microSD card slot for additional storage options. Its main camera will be a 20-megapixel rear-facing shooter with ZEISS optics. It is said to support Qi wireless charging. To keep the lights on, the phablet is expected to come with a 3,000 mAh battery (possibly the removable type as well). It will run Windows 10 Mobile out of the box.

Alleged CAD renders leak Microsoft Lumia 950 dimensions

Earlier, we came across an alleged CAD render of the unannounced Microsoft Lumia 950 XL. Now alleged CAD renders of the smartphone-sized Microsoft Lumia 950 have been leaked as well.

Microsoft Lumia 950 CAD renders

The alleged CAD renders and video comes to courtesy of @OnLeaks, a Twitter account known for leaking information on yet to be unveiled mobile devices. @OnLeaks claims that the image above is the CAD render used by Microsoft to manufacture the unannounced device. These renders are also used by case manufacturers to make sure their cases fit devices like a glove. The renders also show that Microsoft’s logo will be embossed on the rear cover. Also found on the rear case is the PureView Zeiss label for the rear camera.

Past reports have revealed that the Microsoft Lumia 950 will sport a 5.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD). It is said to offer 32 GB of internal storage. If additional storage space is needed, it does come with a microSD card slot. Under the hood is said to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 64-bit hexa-core processor coupled with 3 GB of RAM. To keep the lights on, it is said to come with a 3,000 mAh battery.

Meanwhile, the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phablet is said to sport a 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD). Back to the Lumia 950 XL’s specs, it is said to offer 32 GB of internal storage. If additional storage space is needed, it does come with a microSD card slot. Under the hood is said to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor, coupled with 3 GB of RAM. This is worrisome, as the said processor has caused overheating issues for other smartphones. To keep the lights on, it is said to come with a 3,300 mAh battery.

Both smartphone and phablet are expected to rock a 20-megapixel PureView rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing for snapping selfies and video chat.

Both devices are expected to be clad in polycarbonate (plastic). Although plastic may sound tacky, past high-end Lumia devices have proven that the use of a plastic can make the devices look and feel premium.

According to serial leakster Evan Blass in an earlier tweet, Microsoft will lift the lid on the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL on the 10th of October, a few days after the devices are expected to be unveiled. The software giant is expected to officially announce the two on the 6th of October in a press event in New York City.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL dimensions revealed by renders

Microsoft is yet to confirm whether or not the high-end Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL exist or not, and yet the two have been heavily leaked as of late. Now, a leaked CAD render of the device reveals the Lumia 950 XL’s dimensions.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL dimensions

Microsoft-Lumia-950-XL-renders

The renders seen above come to us courtesy of @OnLeaks, a Twitter account known for leaking information on yet to be announced devices. Reportedly, the renders and video above is “original factory CAD” render of the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL. If genuine, the device should look like what can be seen above when available in stores.

The renders reveal the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL will measure 151.9 x 78.4 x 7.8 mm (or 9.9 mm at its thickest point, due to the bump for the camera). The renders also reveal that the device will sport a 5.7-inch screen. According recent leaks, the screen’s resolution will be 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD).

We’ve learned from previous reports that the Lumia 950 XL will rock the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor, coupled with 3 GB of RAM. This may sound good, but, if you’ve been following the new, this could prove to be a disaster, since the said CPU is plagued with overheating issues. It has caused devices such as the Sony XPERIA Z3 Plus to crash. Moving forward, the phablet’s camera combo consists of a 20-megapixel PureView rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera to take care of selfies and video chat. To take care of your storage needs, the device will feature 32 GB of internal storage. It also comes with a microSD card slot. To keep the lights on, a 3,300 mAh battery will be on board. The Lumia 950 XL, like past high-end Lumia devices, will support Qi wireless charging. The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phablet as well as the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL smartphone will run Windows 10 Mobile out of the box.

According to reports, Microsoft will lift the lid on the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL in the first half of October. It is yet to be determined, however, when the two devices will be available in stores.
