The Nexus S measures up at 123.9x 63x 10.9 millimeters whilst weighing in at a lightweight 129 g, making the Google Nexus S a slimline handset and relatively pocket friendly considering the size of the screen. The 4 inch super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen does a fantastic job of displaying on screen imagery thanks to the ability to display up to 16M individual colours within a pixel configuration of 480x 800.

The screen comes with many features in its own right such as proximity, gyro and accelerometer sensors, multi touch input support and a touch-sensitive shortcut panel. The glass itself has an oleophobic surface preventing the build up of fingerprints and smudges when the screen is in use.

In order to gain a speedier connection to the web, users can take advantage of the built in Wi-Fi capabilities whenever they have access to the appropriate wireless networks in the local proximity. Bluetooth and micro USB connections are included as standard allowing users to connect to compatible devices, whilst EDGE and GPRS keep the handset connected to the appropriate cellular networks on the move.

Auto-focus, an LED flash and touch focus are just some of the included features which, go a long way to simplifying the task of taking photos as well as improving the quality. Another included feature of the camera is geo-tagging, which functions thanks to GPS. This automatically records the location at which the camera was used. As an alternative method of image capture, the camera boasts the ability to shoot high definition video footage, and this is in 720p quality. Additionally, a VGA camera is also included and located on the front of the handset. This allows users to carry out video calls and take portrait pictures.

The wildly popular Android OS is the operating system of choice, in this case the latest version for Smartphones, 2.3 (aka Gingerbread). This allows user to customise many aspects of the HTC Sense user interface, and download additional applications from numerous different categories in the Android Market. A 1 GHz processor is on hand to handle demanding applications for lightning fast user experience.

Black Magic – The HTC Magic in Black Released – Google G2 Phone

Most of the pictures across the internet show a picture of the HTC Magic in its white colour variant as seen on Vodafone’s website, however it is the Black edition of this new Android phone also known as the Google G2 phone that has been released by retailers in the UK.

The Black HTC Magic offers the exact same features, technology and design as the white edition Google phone but houses the power of the Android in a silky black finished casing, this amazing new touch screen mobile phone has now been made available on Vodafone pay monthly contract deals in the UK from free at just £25 per month line rental!

The HTC Magic is an evolution of the HTC Dream and its design suggests a more conscious effort by the manufacturer to take on its two big touchscreen rivals, the Blackberry Storm and the Apple iPhone 3G.

The HTC Magic is a Vodafone exclusive release in the UK and around Europe and will again be co-branded by Google. The G1 was a brave design, with its unorthodox chin and oddly satisfying keyboard slide mechanism, but the HTC Magic sticks to far more conventional design philosophy and in doing so, has reduced weight and increased attractiveness. The lozenge-shaped phone weighs 118 grams, is a reasonable 13mm thick and the 3.2” screen displays at a resolution of 320×480.

But it’s what the screen displays that makes the Magic one of the most anticipated and desirable handsets of 2009 – Google’s Android OS. As the Magic doesn’t have a physical keyboard, this version of the operating system will be carrying the Cupcake firmware update which amongst other things, incorporates a virtual keyboard. Although Cupcake is expected to be spread to existing Android users, it’s looking increasingly likely it’ll be seen here first. Android is a smooth little thing too, with the capacitive touchscreen only needing the slightest touch to slide screens or enter features. We also love the drop down panel which contains all updates and new events in one place.

So, the design is a good one, the trackball and touchscreen top-notch and the OS one of the best out there, how do the features compare? Connectivity plays a big part in the Magic’s feature list as it’s a 3.5G handset with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPRS and EDGE plus Bluetooth support for your wireless headset. Although there is only 192MB of RAM onboard, the black HTC Magic has a MicroSD card slot ready for cards up to 16GB in size, however we would have preferred a larger amount of internal storage in addition to this.

Flip the Magic over and above the Google script you’ll see the lens for the 3.2 megapixel camera. It’s equipped with an LED flash and autofocus as one would expect and in a blow to the iPhone, it has video capture enabled too. Inside the phone is a GPS receiver which uses Google Maps to guide you to your destination, along with a digital compass. The Android suite also has direct access to Google’s Mail, Docs and Seach, plus a competent MP3 player and a battery tipped to provide 430 hours of standby and over 7 hours of talktime!

Key Features:

* It uses Google’s Android as its operating system.

* The 3G phone has HSDPA support at 7.2Mbps and a Wi-Fi connection.

* The camera is 3.2 megapixels.

* Built-in GPS and a digital compass.

* Easy access to Google’s online application suite such as Mail, Docs, Maps and Search.

Quick Overview:

Anyone seriously looking at the HTC Magic Black has a wealth of alternative choices to consider, from the iPhone and the Storm to the Samsung i8910 HD, LG Arena and even the Nokia 5800. For the Magic to emerge victorious, it needs to have something over and above its competition and it does, Android. Even with the launch of the Android Marketplace and the Cupcake update, Android still has plenty more to come.
