Google Play game revenue quadrupled in Q4 2013 – Apple App Store game revenue doubled

Two reports from app market experts, IDC and App Annie, reveal that Google Play game revenue quadrupled in Q4 2013, while Apple App Store game revenue doubled in the same period.IDC-PGR-2013-Review-Chart

TheNextWeb reports, “The report shows that gamers spent more than four times as much money on Google Play smartphone and tablet games in the fourth quarter of 2013 as they did a year earlier, while the revenue brought in by games on iOS App Store more than doubled over the same period. In terms of absolute value though, iOS game revenue continues to lead that on Google Play “by a wide margin,” the report notes.”

App Annie CEO Bertrand Schmitt said, “While consumers have traditionally spent more on games versus other types of apps, more than 75 percent of combined iOS & Google Play consumer app spending in 4Q 2013 came from games.”

The site adds, “According to the report, Candy Crush and Puzzle & Dragons were the big winners across both dominant smartphone platforms for the full year of 2013. These were the top three grossing games, listed by platform:

  • iOS App Store: Clash of Clans, Puzzle & Dragons, Candy Crush Saga
  • Google Play: Puzzle & Dragons, Candy Crush Saga, Monster Taming for Kakao

Lewis Ward, research director of gaming at IDC, said, “The Google Play ecosystem in particular benefitted from a big regional upswing in the installed base of smartphones and tablets in 2013, but rising living standards in Asia-Pacific countries generally also buoyed game spending.”

Former Zynga employee spills the beans on Reddit about copying other games

Like playing Zynga games such as FarmVille or Mafia Wars on your PC or smartphone such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 (see more on the Samsung Galaxy S4 here) or Apple iPhone 5 (see more on the Apple iPhone 5 here)? If you do, you may not like what a former Zynga employee has to say about copying other games.Zynga

On Reddit (see it here), former_zyngite, the anonymous former Zynga employee, said, “I was just laid off yesterday, along with 520 other employees. I’m willing to talk about the company that all gamers love to hate if anyone wants to know more about it. I need to keep my identity on the down-low because I’m job hunting now and not trying to burn bridges. So I can’t give specifics on the the projects I worked on, but can talk to a lot of the games, processes, culture, infamous game copying, etc. I was there for almost two years. I was in a creative position.”

He adds, “Their business strategy is terrible. Their major issues are the inability to adjust to the changing market. They did great when Facebook gaming was on the rise, but now it’s declining and mobile is on the rise. They’re trying to change over, but employ too many of the same game development ‘best practices’ that were developed for Facebook games. These just don’t translate to the mobile market, which is why they’re suffering in that market.

At this rate, I’d give them another 2 to 3 years. They make money and have a lot in the bank. But they also throw away money like you wouldn’t believe. If they actually manage to change their strategy and start putting out some big hits, they could be around a lot longer.”

Speaking about copying other games, he said, “I think that early on it was blatant. Later it became well known practice at Zynga, but rather poor taste. Dream Heights/Tiny Tower was a big slap in the face. Sims Social/The Ville was the last straw.

“Towards the end of my time it was not so much that games were straight up ripped off, but key features would be. Such as the general method or menu flow that a game handles it’s multiplayer. The idea being that if it works for that game, it would work for our game.

“In general though, most of us knew what game was copying what. Bubble Safari was a copy of Bubble Witch Saga. The Ville was Sims Social. Hidden Chronicles was Gardens of Time. The company didn’t call it out for what it was, but you knew because whatever project you were on most likely had similar pressures to match and beat a game on the market.”

Angry Birds Space downloads reach 10 million in just 72 hours

On Twitter, Rovio has announced that the latest sequel to the Angry Birds franchise, Angry Birds Space, has been downloaded a whopping 10 million times in just a little bit under 72 hours.

Gamespot has given Angry Birds Space a score of 8 out of 10, saying that the game offers a “fresh take on a familiar formula”. However, Gamespot does say that it’s a shame players would have to pay another 69p for hardcore levels when they’ve already paid 69p for the game, which has been voiced out on the game’s iTunes page.

Although users are complaining about having to pay twice, this hasn’t stopped players from downloading the game, which is also available on Mac, PC, and Android. Rovio once announced that Angry Birds space would not be coming to Windows Phone. Fortunately, the Finnish firm reversed their previous statement and announced that the game would be soon available on the Windows Phone Marketplace. This means Windows Phone such as the Nokia Lumia 800 and HTC Titan will soon get to enjoy the game as well.
