No earphone jack on Apple’s waterproof iPhone 7?

According to rumours back in September, Apple was planning to make the iPhone 7 waterproof. If a recent patent awarded to Apple by the USPTO (patent images below) is anything to go by, the next iPhone will feature a system that seals off ports protecting components that are vulnerable to water damage.

Waterproof but no earphone jack?

The patent called “Electronic Devices With Housing Port Shutters” is a system that detects the amount of moisture around an iPhone. Once too much moisture is detected, the system closes ports by using shutters, which protects the iPhone’s components from water damage. The system also determines when it is safe to open these shutters.

Back in March, Apple also received a patent that suggests that the next iPhone will be waterproof. The patent describes a process that coats the components of an iPhone with a hydrophobic material. This is applied by exposing the component to fluoropolymer gas in a chamber and then applying voltage. This will allow the gas to turn into plasma, which will stick to the component. This process is similar to Motorola’s nanocoating.

As for the omission of the 3.5 mm earphone jack, Japanese blog Macotakara  claims that the Cupertino firm is planning to make the iPhone 7 thinner by taking away the said jack. If users wish to make use of headsets, they would have to be of the Bluetooth type or connect via the Lightning connector. Apple is said to be planning to bundle earpods that connect to the Lightning port. A 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter is also said to be sold as a separate accessory.

So far, we’ve learned from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst known for making accurate predictions on Apple devices, claims that the iPhone 7 will sport 3 GB of RAM and be 6 mm-thin. This year’s Apple iPhone 6S is 7.1 mm-thin.

As for the Apple iPhone 7’s release date, rumours claiming that Apple is planning to release its next iPhone earlier than expected is less likely to be true. Apple is likely to launch the device in September, the same month Apple usually lists the lid on new iPhones.
