Over the last few years, it has become common knowledge that Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has been struggling financially. This is due to the fact that it has been largely unable to compete with rival manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung which have gone on to dominate the market with popular smartphone lines such as the iPhone and Galaxy S models.
However, towards the end of last year Nokia saw a change in its fortunes following the November launch of the Lumia 920. This is the Finnish manufacturer’s latest flagship Windows Phone showcasing Windows Phone 8 operating system from Microsoft. The phone quickly became a huge commercial success, whilst also gaining widespread critical acclaim.
Prior to the launch of the Lumia 920, Nokia had been losing a lot of money and much of the market share which it once dominated as the top mobile phone manufacturer in the world. However, following the launch of the Lumia 920, Nokia managed to post a quarterly profit in Q4 of 2012, for the third consecutive three month period. According to GSM Arena, an impressive 4.4 million Lumia phones were sold by Nokia in the final three months of last year. During this period, Nokia sold a total of 79.6 million phones, 6.6 million of which were smartphones in the Lumia and Symbian ranges. There are still reports coming in from retailers and networks around the world that demand for the Lumia 920 is extremely high. The success of the phone was largely unexpected by many industry analysts, and not even Nokia could have predicted that the phone would be so popular. As a result, Nokia’s production facilities in Asia have been somewhat unable to cope with a one orders placed by retailers and networks, and are struggling to supply enough phones to eager customers.
Nokia will certainly tried to build on the momentum it has recently picked up, and there is even talk of new Lumia handsets in the pipeline for release later this year. Of course, before then the Lumia 920 is likely to only increase in popularity. As soon as we hear of any more news on the replacement for the Lumia 920 we will of course keep you updated.
