Android and Apple’s iOS remain the dominant smartphone operating systems on the market, leaving less than 10% of the market for other platforms to compete.
The popularity of these two operating systems comes largely down to popular devices like the Apple iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 which run the iOS platform, with phones like the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3 which utilise Google’s Android OS.
One of the major appealing factors of owning a smartphone is the ability to download applications and massively increase the versatility of the handset. Apple pioneered the AppStore format when it launched its first iPhone model back into 1007. The AppStore remains the number one app download service, though it is quickly being caught up by Google Play, which is the equivalent to download portal for the Android OS.
However, according to a recent study from App Annie intelligence, revenues created by the AppStore since January this year have been of four times higher than those generated by the Google Play Store. However, Google’s Play Store is showing much faster growth than the AppStore. Since January, growth of Google Play has been around 311%, whereas the AppStore has only grown by around 12.9% in the same period. There is already talk to of the Apple iPhone 5S and Samsung Galaxy S4 being launched next year, and both of these would prove to be very popular phones. The question is, which one would prove the most popular? Devices like these would have the biggest affect on which app download service becomes number one.
