It is hardly a secret that the launch of the iPhone 5 has been anything but smooth. While the latest iPhone has seen instant commercial success and a decent level of critical acclaim, there have been numerous complaints made about various aspects of the phone.
These range from the camera capturing a mysterious purple lighting effect, to the new aluminium casing scratching too easily. However, one of the most controversial and certainly most talked about issues of the phone is Apple Maps. This is a mapping application created by Apple to replace Google maps as part of the new iOS 6 software. The new software is installed as standard on the iPhone 5 and an update was rolled out to existing devices like the iPhone 4S alongside the launch of the iPhone 5.
Problems have been reported with Apple Maps include unreliable turn by turn navigation, poor quality aerial imagery and inaccurate data being displayed on maps. For example, some town names are misspelled (and in some cases even missing) and some landmarks are even missing, including a major Scandinavian Airport.
As soon as problems with the application began being reported, Apple was quick to reassure its customers that it was on the case, and promised to make Apple Maps the best application of its kind. Since Apple made this promise though, there have been very few improvements made to the apps. As a result the head of the Apple Maps team has recently fired from Apple, and the company has reportedly asked TomTom for help to fix the app. Because TomTom is one of the biggest names in the SatNav market, it certainly knows its way round mapping software so makes the perfect candidate to work with Apple to address issues with Apple Maps.
There is talk of an iOS 6 optimised version of Google Maps in the pipeline, note that this stage it is still unclear whether or not this will be approved for availability on the app store. Find the best iPhone 5 Deals and compare prices for iPhone 4S Contracts on our website.
