Following on from the successful Samsung Galaxy S2 there were always high hopes for the Galaxy S3 when it was launched earlier this year. This great handset is proving more popular than its best selling predecessor and during the third quarter of 2012 the model displaced the iPhone 4S from the number one position and established itself as the best selling device during this period.
Figures have recently been released for the third quarter of 2012 and they will delight executives at Samsung. During this three month period the Samsung Galaxy S3 managed to sell 18 million units, exceeding what the iPhone 4S could post for the very first time. The figures for the Apple phone were 16.2 million, nearly two million under Samsung’s impressive total. The October launch of the iPhone 5 was a key factor behind this with many potential iPhone 4S consumer perhaps delaying a purchase in anticipation of the new device. The figures were released by Strategy Analytics and Neil Mawston from the company commented “the Samsung Galaxy S3 has proven widely popular with consumers and operators”. The company look well on course to smash sales predictions for this popular phone.
The third quarter smartphone figures may make great reading for executives at Samsung but it predicted that the Samsung Galaxy S3 may not hold onto the top spot for long. The October launch of the iPhone 5 from Apple along with the impressive early sales of this device suggest that Apple may top the charts once again by the turn of the year. For the time being however Samsung can claim to produce the worlds most popular smartphone. The popularity of the S3 has had a positive effect on Samsung’s overall profit for Q3 as well. The company posted a $5.9 billion profit, a 91 per cent leap on the same period last year. The Galaxy line up of phones plays a major part in these figures with other models such as the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy R contributing towards the success.
In just three months time we will get to see if the Samsung Galaxy S3 can hold on to the top spot but for the time being at least the device can claim to be the most popular in the world.
