Apple looking to get $700 million more from Samsung

According to Foss Patents, the Cupertino firm is not content with more than $1 billion awarded to it by a jury at the expense of Samsung. It is looking to get an additional $707 million from the Korean firm. This brings the total to over $1.7 billion in damages.

Aside from the billions of dollars the Korean tech giant has to cough up, the iPhone maker is likely to enforce a permanent injunction banning the sale of Samsung products. Samsung may have to redesign its devices, just like it did with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany. The injunctions, however, could reach beyond the Samsung-made products covered in the patent case. This means the smartphones and tablets sporting the same features could be included as well, including the Galaxy S3. Samsung could potentially have to redesign its entire Android range.

US Judge Lucy Koh could grant Apple’s request, or it could go the other way and be denied. We’ll just have to wait and see on what the court decides.

Apple has been awarded over $1 billion in damages, after Samsung was found guilty by the jury of infringing Apple’s patents. Every single one of Samsung’s claims, on the other hand, was rejected.

Apple said that the result of the trial has sent “a loud and clear message that stealing isn’t right”. Samsung said that the outcome of the trial is not an Apple victory, but “a loss for the American consumer”.

Do you think Apple should be awarded over $700 million more, after the Jury awarded it more than $1 billion. Do you think it should just be happy with the previous outcome? Do you think tech giants should stop these grueling legal debacles and focus more on making their products more innovative? Share your thoughts through a comment on our Facebook page.
