The iPhone 5 was previously reported to sport a smaller dock connector and new earphones. Now we have a new name for the smaller dock and earphones. The dock connector has been dubbed Lightning and the earphones have been dubbed Earpods.
According to previous reports, the new iPhone will sport a smaller 9-pin dock connector, which is smaller compared to the 30-pin connector found on the iPhone 4S. This will allow Apple to move the headphone jack to the bottom of the handset and free space for more components such as a 4G chip and a bigger battery. This also allows the Cupertino firm to make the iPhone 5 slimmer.
According to 9to5Mac, Lightning matches Thunderbolt, which is the lightning-fast connectors found on Macs. Thunderbolt can transfer large amounts of data, which is more than what is required by the iPad or iPhone. However, they can transfer larger video and photo files compared to the 30-pin dock connector. This suggests that the Lightning on the iPhone 5 will transfer data to your computer and vice versa at lightning-speeds. We’re also hoping that it charges the battery faster.
True, having a faster connector presents a number of advantages. However, there is a downside. The smaller dock connector means that current cables and docks will be incompatible with the new device. Apple is said to be making two different adaptors for the iPhone 5 to work on current kits.
The new earphones have been dubbed the Earpods. They will cost the same as current earphones. We’re hoping the new earphones will be more comfortable compared to the current version.
