LG said to unveil CX 2 at MWC – may take the name ‘3D Max’

According to reports, LG will be unveiling the successor of its stereoscopic handset the Optimus 3D at MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona this coming February. The handset is codenamed the LG CX 2, which is said to be unveiled as the ‘3D Max’.

The handset packs a 1.2 GHz dual-core OMAP processor by Texas Instruments. It will come with a NOVA 3D glasses-free display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. It will sport 8 GB of onboard storage. Lastly, it comes with dual 5 megapixel cameras for that 3D effect. The smartphone will support 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and an NFC chip.

Sadly, the handset is said to ship running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It will be unveiled alongside the Korean phone manufacturer’s new flagship the quad-core LG X3, which will have Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) pre-installed. The CX 2 will be unveiled this February in Barcelona and will be released in spring.

We’re hoping the reports of the CX 2 running Gingerbread are false. Why LG would unveil a high-end Android smartphone running Gingerbread is beyond us, especially when it’s introduced alongside LG’s flagship with ICS onboard.

We’re not sure if the CX 2 will be a success this year, since 3D handsets such as the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D didn’t make a significant impact in the market. Will 2012 be different? We’ll just have to wait and see.
