Samsung announces profits of £2.9 billion in Q4 2011 – Apple made more than twice as much
In Samsung’s annual earnings call, the Korean tech giant announced that it made a whopping £2.9 billion in the last quarter of 2011. Despite Samsung’s success, Apple made more than twice as much.
Samsung amassed a total of £26.7 billion in sales in the fourth quarter of last year. Out of the £26.7 billion, £2.9 billion was profit.
Samsung boasts 300 million phones sold in 2011. It owes its success in sales to the Galaxy S2, one of the most popular handsets in the market. These figures are sure to grown with handsets such as the Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Galaxy Nexus, the 5.3 inch Galaxy Note, and the highly anticipated Galaxy S3.
Apple, on the other hand, has more reason to celebrate. It made £8.3 billion compared to Samsung’s £2.9 billion. Apple owes its success to none other than the iPhone 4S, which sold 37 million units in the last quarter of 2011.
In the US, the iPhone has overtaken Android handsets. In the UK, Android still dominates. Since the Galaxy S2 was released late in the US, we’re wondering if Apple would still announce stellar profits.
Samsung and Apple may be celebrating whopping profits. However, not all have reason to celebrate. Nokia announced losses of £800 million, despite selling 1 million unites of the Lumia 800. Hopefully, with the release of more Windows Phones such as the Lumia 710 and Lumia 900, the ailing Finnish phone manufacturer gets back in the game.
What do you think of the success announced by Samsung and Apple? Should the competition just give up, or do other manufacturers such as Nokia still have a fighting chance? Give us your thoughts.
