Rumors flying around on the Google Nexus tablet

Speaking to an Italian newspaper, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt said, “Noi nei prossimi sei mesi contiamo di mettere sul mercato un tablet di altissima qualità.” In English, this translates to, “we’ll bring a tablet of the highest quality to market in the next six months.” So what should we expect from Google’s upcoming tablet?

The majority expect Google’s tablet to give the Apple iPad a run for its money. However, with so many iPad 2 rivals out there such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Motorola Xoom, do you think Google will add more to the confusion? Digitimes doesn’t think so. According to Digitimes, Google’s tablet will rival the Amazon Kindle Fire. Specs include a 7 inch OLED display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. Just like the Kindle Fire, Google’s tablet will be built around media. Amazon sells digital content on its online store through the Kindle Fire; Google’s tablet will sell media through Google Music, Google Books, and YouTube.

Now that we know a little bit more about Google’s tablet, what’s it going to be called? The Samsung Galaxy Nexus represents Android in its vanilla form. So did its predecessor the Nexus S and its predecessor the Nexus One. Since this tablet represents Android, it’s likely the tablet will carry the Nexus moniker, possibly the Google Nexus tablet or something to that effect.

Since Schmidt said that they would be launching a high-end tablet this summer, we won’t be surprised if the tablet ships running Ice Cream Sandwich. We’d actually be surprised if it ran Honeycomb.

When pricing comes to mind, it wouldn’t make any sense for the Google Nexus tablet to compete with the Kindle Fire if it were more expensive compared to the Amazon slate. This means that it’s likely Google will be selling the tablet at a loss just like Amazon. Google will make up for the loss through the digital content it sells, again, just like Amazon.  We’re guessing it’ll be sold in the US for $199. It might be sold in the UK from around £150 to £200.
