Gingerbread update for LG Optimus 3D bringing video enhancements and faster HSPA+

When we think of stereoscopic technology on smartphones the first two handsets that come to mind are the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D. Both offer dual front-facing cameras for that 3D effect; both sport 4.3 inch 3D glasses-free displays, and both come packed with dual-core processors under the hood. However, HTC’s handset has an advantage over LG’s. It ships with the Gingerbread version of Android.

Just recently, LG announced that its Optimus series would be getting the gingerbread update. This includes the Optimus 2X (the world’s first dual-core smartphone) and the Optimus 3D. The update will be rolling out to the Optimus 3D late this November.

Not only will the smartphone be getting a more current version of Android; it will also be giving the handset a few enhancements. The Android OS version 2.3.5 update will be rolling out to the Optimus 3D, bringing 2D video edition, 3D video edition, 3D-2D conversion, higher bit rates for 3D videos, and faster HSPA+. In the past, the phone was capable of download speeds of up to 14.4 mbps. With the update, this will be bumped up to 21 mbps on a 3G network.

Unfortunately, the update will only be available for unlocked phones on the 21st of November. Since updates are subject to network operator testing for phones on a contract, it’s anybody’s guess when the Gingerbread update will be rolling out for LG Optimus 3Ds on a contract.
