For anybody familiar with the Android operating system that the Acer Stream uses, the first thing you will notice when using the handset is the layout of the screen. Acer seem to have made a conscious effort to re design the user interface, which does make a refreshing change from multiple homescreens.

There is the option to switch back to the traditional Android version, however Acer‘s own attempt is very user friendly when you get used to it. The top part of the screen houses three columns, the central one showing alarms, date and time information. To the left of this is where you find all of your most recently used apps, and to the right is where you can access all of your media content. Beneath these columns there is a selection of icons that give access to the phones main functions.

The Acer Stream features a very comprehensive phonebook which allows you to enter multiple numbers for each contact as well as e mail, personal address and even IM nickname. One potentially useful feature is the ability to divert specific calls directly to voicemail. Call quality is very clear on the phone, whether made on speaker phone or in the traditional manner.

Connectivity options are superb on the Acer Stream. The handset is an ideal travel companion thanks to its Quadband GSM/GPRS and EDGE. Locally, WiFi is supported in the familiar B and G speeds as well as the faster new N speed. WiFi certainly offers the best online experience, this is however dependent on connection to either a private network or a public WiFi hotspot. The Stream impresses when it come to local connectivity.

Bluetooth 2.1 allows wireless connection to compatible products and the familiar micro USB is also present to facilitate data transfer to and from your home PC. A less common but none the less extremely useful feature is the HDMI port, making watching your HD footage captured on the handset simple through you home television.

The Acer Stream is a breakthrough for the manufacturer, a big improvement on previous efforts which earn its right to compete directly with the big hitters such as HTC and Samsung.

White Samsung i9000 Galaxy S Now on Orange

The new Samsung Galaxy S in White has now been released on Orange deals, following its initial launch yesterday on O2 deals this latest white edition of the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S now has double the number of pay monthly deals available plus some great free gift offers.

You can pick up a free Samsung Galaxy S White from just £30.00 line rental per month on four different Orange deals, these are on Orange Dolphin 30, Racoon 30, Panther 30 and and Canary 30. The pick of the bunch has to be the Panther 30 deal as there is 750MB of included internet usage which is an essential ingredient when using the Galaxy S to its full potential, also included is unlimited SMS and 400 minutes of calls.

The experience of using the Samsung Galaxy S is superb. A 1Ghz Qualcom A8 Cortex processor keeps everything ticking along at a tremendous pace. Their is no noticeable lag in the loading of applications and swiping your finger across the screen brings an instant response. The operating system used on this model is the ever reliable Android 2.1. This offers users the normal homescreen layout, where you have 7 screens where you can place your various icons.

Samsung have chosen to skin Android with their own TouchWiz user interface, which does bring some pleasing changes to the phone. Social Hub for example aggregates all of your incoming data from various social networking sites. The hub works with Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, and seems a very effective tool to stay up to date with what is happening in the world around you.

The UI also brings Samsungs own Swype text input method to the table. This is an extremely effective way of speeding up the composition of texts and e mails, as rather than individually pressing each key required you can move your finger across the screen in one continuous motion. The excellent artificial intelligence of the unit nearly always correctly guesses the word you are looking for. Speaking of typing, thanks to the large 4″ screen, the virtual keypad features large button which are well spaced out, further enhancing the user experience.

The Samsung Galaxy S is a lovely looking mobile phone. At first glance the black back panel, large screen and curved edges are reminiscent of the Apple iPhone 3GS. In terms of size, it really is a tale of two halves. Height and width measurements are slightly wider than many rival models in order to accommodate the larger screen, however the depth is wafer thin at just 9.9mm and thanks to the extensive use of lightweight plastic, the weight of 121 grammes is also less than you would expect.

There is plenty of media support on the phone for those times when you are not making a call or browsing the web. A wide range of video file formats are supported, including newer formats such as MKV. The combination of such support alongside the massive screen makes the handset perfect for watching video files. A large amount of memory is required to store such data, so thankfully the Samsung Galaxy S comes with either 8GB or 6GB of internal memory. A micro SD card slot is also located on the phone, meaning there is potential to increase this memory by a further 32GB.

For anybody looking for a top quality smartphone, you could do a lot worse than the Samsung Galaxy S, which performs very well in all areas.
