Review:
Looking very similar in design to the original Blackberry Storm the new Storm2′s upgrades are pretty much hidden until you get your hands on this new device, the Storm was Blackberry’s first ever touch screen phone and of course was prone to bugs, the manufacturer has addressed these by incorporating a new Blackberry operating system that tracks the users finger far more accurately providing a far smoother and engaging touch screen experience.
One of the biggest mistakes made with the original model was for Blackberry to leave out the all important WiFi support, the Storm2 has this covered and is ready to connect to home and office wireless networks as well as public and private hotspots.
The last major upgrade comes in the form of memory, this has been doubled up to 2GB with an integrated 2GB card expandable up to 16GB, this will be even bigger once 32Gb cards are available. The good sized 3.25 inch touch screen is still present as is a 3.2 mega pixel camera with flash and autofocus although this time Blackberry has incorporated image stabilisation into the Storm2.
Other features include stereo Bluetooth 2.1, 3.5G support and GPS, there is also a comprehensive multimedia player with a 3.5mm audio jack so that you can use your own headphones and a web browser. The biggest selling point of all Blackberry phones is their obvious support for multiple email platforms, the Blackberry Storm2 is no different in this area and also adds in further features to your contacts with personal information management tools.
There is a wealth of new applications that can be downloaded (similar to the iPhone 3GS and its App store, Nokia and the Ovi store and Android and its Android Market) with some being free of charge and others demanding a small download price.
Opinion:
A vast improvement on the original model, the Blackberry Storm2 now falls in line with most mid range smart phones, yes – mid range. This is not a competitor to the likes of the Nokia N900, Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 or HTC HD2 which all offer a better feature set but obviously for a higher price.
Alternatives:
Acer E200, HP iPAQ Data Messenger, HTC Touch HD
