One of Nokia’s biggest launches of the year has just taken place, the new Nokia N97 Mini is now available on a range of Vodafone tariffs. This latest addition to the N-Series range offers nearly all of the functionality of the original Nokia N97 but the Mini edition is smaller and lighter by making just a few cosmetic changes.

Review:

Nokia have stated that the N97 Mini is firmly aimed at the youth and fashion market, this particular segment are not keen on carrying a large device around in their pocket and instead prefer something that they can quickly whip out and show off. The new Nokia N97 Mini ticks these boxes and still retains the extremely useful slide-out Qwerty keyboard.

The most noticeable cosmetic change is actually on the keyboard where on the N97 there was a navigational button taking up quite a bit of space the Nokia N97 Mini has removed this allowing the keyboard to spread the entirety of its width. The next difference is in the size of the main touch screen, the N97 Mini offers a 3.2 inch display with the same 640 x 360 pixel resolution as the N97 which is great for browsing the web, emailing and viewing documents.

The Nokia N97 Mini also sheds a full 12g off the original weight of the Nokia N97 and the overall dimensions of 113 x 52.5 x 14.2mm leave this latest model with a far smaller footprint, the internal memory has been cut back from the extraordinary 32GB of the N97 to a still substantial 8GB which can still be expanded further with MicroSD cards.

The same great 5.0 mega pixel camera with Carl Ziess optics is still present in this new model, the camera features a dual LED flash and can record video at 30 frames per second for high quality playback, also onboard is A-GPS which coupled with Ovi Maps provides turn by turn navigation, there is also hundreds more applications that can be downloaded for the Nokia N97 Mini from the Ovi store.

Further features include Wi-Fi, TV Out, 3G, HSDPA and a 3.5mm jack which allows you to listen to your favourite music via the multimedia player with your own headphones, there’s also some new software on the Nokia N97 Mini including support for social networking sites such as Facebook for quick access.

Opinion:

If you’re not a lover of large, bulky phones but do love the functionality that they offer then the new N97 Mini fills this gap perfectly, the slimmed down dimensions and weight make for a far smaller handset that’s easily tucked away in a pocket or bag. The differences between the N97 and the new Nokia N97 Mini are small and not overly important in terms of features and specifications which makes this latest N-Series device a real contender in the smaller smart phones market.
