Sonim XP1 Tough Phone is JCB Phone without the Branding

February 28, 2008

The new JCB phone has taken the mobile market by storm but not many consumers realise that it is in fact the Sonim XP1 Tough Phone which is available in Black from Vodafone. If you like the sound of owning a phone that is dustproof, shatterproof and water resistant but don’t like the bright yellow colour of the JCB Tough Phone then the Sonim XP1 could be for you.

Sonim Xp1

The Sonim XP1 is far more than a simple container for communications service. Sonim mobile is setting the new standard for ruggedized phones. The XP1 headset was built for people who use their mobile phones as tools, not fashion assessories.

The XP1 like the JCB Tough is engineered to be equally at home in a factory and forest, a construction site site or a mountain, on a boat in the middle of the ocean or a dry, sweltering desert. The Sonim XP1 was created to suit people who value solidly contructed tools that are built too last rather than disposable devices.

I have had the sonim XP1 for a day now and initially thought it might be the answer to my problem, my nokia 5140 is dying which had one problem it has no blue tooth.

On a positive note I like the XP1 for its ruggedness and as a builder on paper it ticks most of the boxes, but on unpacking it and charging it up, placing the sim card I started to check out the phone and found the following to be annoying, hopefully you will take this as constructive criticism and not negative feedback.

    1. The battery life and signal indicator are very small
    2. To scroll through the telephone numbers you can only type in one search letter k for instance, forcing you to scroll through the whole list of k which is also very slow in operation.
    3. The keypad lock has no possibility for a security key code and a business phone has usually got a contract so it could be unlimited phoning if it ends in the wrong hands.
    4. The phone number search buttons on the left are redundant for me as I have 250 contacts and it forces me to slowly scroll through one by one.
    5. The phone has no speaker volume control forcing me to hold the phone away from my ear, the above buttons would have been a great place for this.
    6. The telephone ring tone volume cannot be set to be ascending, and at its lowest volume setting when the phone rings the first ring is at full volume and then it lowers the volume to the level I set.
    7. To text a message the Xp1 has predictive texting just as any other phone however after typing the word in and changing it to the one I require the word then has to be confirmed by pressing ok every time and then space.
    8. The XP1 has no silence function so it forces me to cancel a phone call instead of silencing it and allowing the caller to leave a message so the caller becomes irritated that the call was cancelled and phones again, you could argue that I could have changed the phone mode to silent however that would mean remembering to switch the function on and of during the course of a day and inevitably forgetting the current setting and the point is that spur of the moment silencing is not possible.
For these reasons I am taking the phone back for an exchange, it is pricy for its specification and it has no camera which I don’t mind its just a shame that the money saved on the camera wasn’t spent on some decent programming, remember the forerunner of this phone is the nokia 5140 and 5140i so at the very least the XP1 should have the same performance and menu programming.

I was offerdto try the JCB phone before purchasing it. I found that the software was not user friendly like Nokia, or its just me as i am use to Nokia phones. I wanted to replace my 6230i, which is playing up. Having played for 3 hours, i boed it up nad took ot back, as i could not get my head around it.

I had written letter to the comb=pany, but no reply receied as yet ( 5 months ago).

The phone it self is fantastic, it what i want but hte soft ware nedds changing and ifthe company does this, I definatelly havea 2nd go.

The company needs to listen to public if it hast omake the impact in the market.
